I decided to venture out to some galleries and thought what better in Toronto than to include the ROM while on my journey as I had not been in quite some time.
The Royal Museum of Ontario's latest exhibition takes artifacts, ceramics, jewellery, sculpture and architecture, offering a tantalizing glimpse into the culture of the ancient Mayans. An appreciation of the symbols behind it as well as the glyphs and language that comprise the art, religion and practices that originated centuries ago in the heart of Mexico.
The exhibition was a unique exploration of a very mysterious time, wrapped around the ingenuity of this ancient culture; an eye-opener of sorts. I was aware and somewhat knowledgeable of the Mayan culture having traveled both to Tulum and Chitzen Itza but seeing it on display in this way revealed it to me in a new perspective.
An educational experience it was as I roamed from artifact to artifact, each one giving me further insight into their remarkable world. From daily life to their burial rituals, the complicated mathematics of their calendar and astronomy and beyond.. I found myself captivated.
It was a great opportunity to explore a truly unique civilization.
