"Stéphane Pompougnac…does this name ring any bells? Hotel Costes? Now it must be starting to make more sense as these two are never dissociated, seeing as Mr Pompougnac is the official DJ for the very exclusive and fashionable Parisian hotel.
The maestro behind the now world-famous Hotel Costes compilations didn’t start off too badly either. He mixed for famous venues such as the Café Costes, Queen, Privilège and even Les Bains-Douches until Jean-Louis Costes himself asked him in 1997 to begin a new residency at his new hotel and restaurant. Read More

More than a decade has passed, and his latest compilation, volume 11, is out and offers another round of French Lounge sounds from jazz to bossa, to international electro. Leana Horne, Waldeck, Variety Lab, Shazz and many more are featured adding a few vocals resulting in gorgeous tracks like number 13, Boa Sorte –a brilliant duet featuring Vanessa Da Mata and Ben Harper.

Stéphane’s talent hasn’t gone unnoticed by celebs (perhaps because they stay at the Costes too). Cameron Diaz has booked him to mix at her restaurant and Massive Attack, Nicole Kidman and Harrisson Ford have also rubbed shoulders with him. No wonder has he become one of the most sought-after DJs spreading French style music all around the globe. The restless Pompougnac has launched his own label SPP as he is planning a new 2009 release. Awdio will be on the lookout for that one. For now you can listen to his selection of tasteful tunes live from Costes every day on Awdio.com."

Stephane Pompougnac's musical talent is something I have enjoyed since having seen him perform at the Buddha Bar in Paris. Nice soothing music on a lazy Sunday or any lazy day for that matter. Musical influences from so many genres.

Summer Heat...Bbq's, Patios and Travels

Some great weather we have been having. Humid and hot at times, warm and breezy at other times. I do enjoy summer and all of the traditions surrounding it. Outdoor barbeques, patios, lakes and cottages and mini get-a-ways.

It is so hard to believe we are already half way through summer.

I have been doing some traveling to New York, a quick trip overseas to Paris and London and will doing a bit more travel to Ottawa, Halifax, Washington DC and hopefully "Hot-Lanta" as well this summer. Anyone in these areas around this time - August to early September, please feel free to contact me :-) and hopefully we can meet up for some summer fun.

I have added some new photos to my site- yet again (always fun to shoot and add new pictures).

I hope everyone is enjoying the summer as much as I am...

Interpreter of Maladies - Jhumpa Lahiri

"Still, there are times I am bewildered by each mile I have traveled, each meal I have eaten, each person I have known, each room in which I have slept. As ordinary as it all appears, there are times when it is beyond my imagination."

Jhumpa Lahiri's Interpreter of Maladies, a collection of nine stories, marks the debut of a remarkable Indian-American writer. A grand debut it is! Her title story has been selected for both the O'Henry award and the annual Best American Short Stories. Topping this, the book, last month, won her the Pulitzer Prize for fiction, 2000.

I was really happy to read the fabulous "Interpreter of Maladies" by Jhumpa Lahiri, especially the last story "The Third and Final Continent".

A beautiful read.

北の家 GUU Izakaya Toronto - Japanese Tapas A Unique Dining Experience

Ahh the joys of eating.

One great thing about Toronto is the diversity and abundance of restaurants there. No matter your preference, you are bound to find something to your liking. From Ethiopian dishes to Romanian fare and almost everything in between, Toronto's restaurant scene is truly an international one.

Having spent so much time both living and traveling through Asia and in particular Japan, I am a bit picky when it comes to Japanese restaurants - meaning I find it difficult to find a really really good one. Even harder, I find, is locating one that serves authentic "feel good" Japanese cuisine, such as the ones you find exploring the side streets of Tokyo or Osaka - loud, busy, great food. I had found such restaurants in Vancouver. But in Toronto.. not so much. (Or perhaps I just haven't figured out where they are..)

That was until..now.

Guu Izakaya is a relatively new restaurant, apparently they opened last December, in the downtown east side of Toronto. Japanese Tapas in a communal pub-like atmosphere, reminiscent of the German beer halls scattered around Munich, but trendier.

I wrote this as I was seated at the bar enjoying a Sapporo with all of the action and energy going on around me. Izakaya was completely full some ten minutes after they opened, with a lineup out the door (apparently they do not take reservations). The open kitchen in front of me was frantic yet amazingly in control. Choosing to sit at the bar gave me the privilege of watching the food be prepared and sent out. Questions.. I had many, as each appetizing dish went out. Behind me were the communal tables full of patrons chattering and enjoying their tapas no doubt. The crowd was a nice mix of young and old, couples and groups, all a variety of different ethnicities.

I eagerly waited for my Karaage - (Deep-Fried Soy Marinated Chicken and Grilled Saba (Mackerel - one of my favorites) with vegetables. It was worth the wait. Both were very good, so I decided to order more. Grilled Avocado and Prawn with Panko Crust - delightful and BC Tuna with Sweet Soy and Chili - heavenly (melts in your mouth). It sounds like a lot but they are Tapas so the portions are quite small. I was completely full with what I ordered.

I warn you, Guu Izakaya is neither a quiet place nor a "cozy" place. It is loud. Beer Hall loud. No quiet "Moshi Moshi" here. Instead, you receive a loud hearty "Irashimase" greeting, similar to receiving a Nostrovia, Santé or L'Chaim ...or however you yell cheers. You also will not find your typical Japanese sushi fare here, as they provide authentic Japanese Tapas. The prices are very reasonable with tapas priced between $4 - $8 most around $6.

Fun with a group, as a couple or on your own, Izakaya is definitely a unique dining experience in Toronto.

Arrive early as this place fills up fast.

Kampai!
